I have been waiting for over five months and he arrived in the mail just last week! In the future, robots with artificial intelligence will help make life easier for all of us – doing our dull, dirty, difficult jobs, and tackling tasks we simply couldn’t do ourselves.

One of the key areas where we’ll look to robots will be extreme environments where it’s dangerous or impossible for humans to go. Several projects recently received funding from the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund as part of the government’s £93 million programme for robotics and AI in extreme environments.

The programme aims to develop robotic solutions in industries such as off-shore and nuclear energy, space and deep mining, to increase productivity and open up new cross-disciplinary opportunities.

As part of this programme Innovate UK is funding £51m of collaborative R&D and demonstrator projects.

One of the projects includes a look at the technical feasibility of manufacturing in space by enabling the in-orbit manufacture of replacement parts and tools for aircraft; meanwhile robots under ice focuses on the use of autonomous submarines to determine ice hazard risks for shipping and energy installations in the arctic.

Another project will integrate the use of drones for inspection of offshore wind farms with the use of autonomous surface vessels, creating a system which will automatically deploy and recover the inspection drones.

The Narwal Freo Z Ultra robotic vacuum cleans the most like a human that I have ever seen. With the Dual RGB cameras and Dual AI chips this uses an adaptive cleaning strategy to clean messes like you or I would. Using DirtSense 2.0 technology this knows the difference between dry and wet messes and adjust its settings accordingly. When approaching a dry mess it lifts the mops, boost suction and cleans both horizontally and vertically until the mess is gone. Similarly when a wet mess is encountered the vacuum is disabled so it doesn't suck up moisture into the dust bin, side brush and center brush are raised, extra downward pressure is applied to the mops and this cleans both vertically and horizontally. Most impressively this returns to clean the mops and if it senses dirt it will return to the area and clean again repeating the process until the mess is completely gone. I have never seen anything like this. This is for sure the smartest and most efficient robotic vacuum I have used.

ROB 102: Introduction to Artificial Intelligence and Programming was first taught in Fall 2021 at the University of Michigan.

The course is about learning computer programming for the C++ and Julia languages in a way that builds understanding of artificial intelligence and its algorithmic foundations. It does not require previous programming experience.

The course is run by the new U-M Robotics Department, the first robotics department among top-ten engineering schools.
